London School of Economics creates new MSc in Accounting

Looks like we have a new entrance to the international accounting education market. Keep an eye out for London's School of Economics and their MSc in Accounting.

Trust in institutions and numbers is fundamental to markets. This
innovative new MSc at the London School of Economics and Political
Science explores what happens when that trust fails, or is seen to be
wanting. At its core, the programme examines the roles of accounting
as an instrument of institutional governance, widely implicated in
decision-making, financial management, performance management,
risk management and organisational control.

We welcome applications for intake in October 2009 from well-qualified
candidates from diverse backgrounds who are curious about
the many roles of accounting in today’s complex and
risky global system.

Obama Tax Plan - does it help the college student? Maybe not

With Barack Obama as the new president, it may be useful to look up his proposed tax plan to see where you fall.

If you are an accounting student that plans on entering the tax profession, it may be useful to read his plans on simplifying the tax code - if you are on the lower ranking parts of the tax field, it may be time to go back to school.

Simplify Tax System So 40 Million Americans Can Do Their Taxes in Less Than Five Minutes. Obama
will reform our tax system to greatly reduce its complexity, consolidating several credits and giving
taxpayers the option of pre-filled tax forms to verify, sign and return. Under the Obama tax plan, 40 million
Americans who take the standard deduction will be able to do their taxes in less than five minutes and will
not have to hire an accountant. This will save Americans more than $2 billion in tax preparer fees and more
than 200 million hours of work.

What else was interesting about reading this final plan? No mention of what he will do for students other than the three words, "reforming student loans" with no mention of anything more. While I have heard promises as to other actions, none of it made it into this plan. I suppose all we can do is sit back and hope that he makes good on his promise for education and students.
