The Potential of Growth of Internet Content in the Future

Looking at things in a long term perspective, the internet is emerging as a large contender over television and print media. The main questions are:

  1. How big is this potential?
  2. What sectors will experience the largest growth?
  3. Where can I put my money to take advantage of this?

In this blog post, we will begin with the first question: How big is the potential growth of online content publishing? According to a study at Berkley, the growth rate is accellerating at a very rapid rate and shows no signs of slowing. For this article we will focus on the world-wide-web and ignroe e-mail, ftp, usenet, irc, etc.

According to the study, the web as users know it currently grows at a rate of 7.3 million pages per day. Thats a lot of stuff! As an American, I understand the popularity of the internet however this is an extremely large amount of content unless you put it in perspective. By examining internet usage by region there is a total of 1.13 billion worldwide internet users. This has grown at a use rate of 214% between 2000-07.

How big is the potential market for internet viewers? Considering that only 17% of the world is linked up, and that the growth rate is so high, one can only imagine how large the long term global market potential can be.
